The desert town of Bikaner's mainstay in handicrafts
is camel skin leather painted in vivid colours. You
will find finely worked pouches, lacquered lampshades,
footwear and cushions in Usta available in shopping
centres around King Edward Memorial Rd, close to the
Junagarh Fort.
Local
carpets and carved wood furniture are also interesting.
There
is a Cottage Industries Institute near Junagarh Fort.
The Urmul Trust runs the Abhivyakti shop inside the
Fort which sells well made items like shawls, tops,
cushion covers, jootis and the traditional folding chair in leather
and wood called pidas The proceeds go directly
to health and education projects in the 115 villages
which participate in the project.
